gentle walk through the Mountains & tea plantations. The choice is
yours.
|
Day 9
|
Back on the bikes we head through
tea plantation country. The short climb to Lipton’s seat
is well worth the visit. The seat is named after
Thomas Lipton, the man who bought tea to Ceylon. The
views from this 6500ft high spot are tremendous.
We will pass Bambarakanda waterfalls which at 850ft is
the highest of the 100 waterfalls which can be found on
Sri Lanka. On Day 8 we will be staying at ‘Worlds
End Lodge’. This tranquil oasis located on the roof of
Sri Lanka is totally isolated from the rest of the
world. There are stunning views and you can enjoy
a refreshing dip in the swimming pool which has to be
located in one of the most scenic places in the world.

Day 10
|
It is out the mountains and down
towards the coast and Yala National Park. Yala has the
highest concentrations of leopard in the world (approx
35)It is possible to take full day jeep safaris
or to split your day into morning and afternoon drives.
Your best chance to see a leopard is generally early in
the morning and then again at dusk. The male leopards in Yala are very confident and are often seen walking the
tracks during the day. Young males in particular seem to
have no fear of the jeep, which can lead to some
excellent photographic opportunities. Along with
leopards there is also a also a substantial elephant
population along with spotted deer, samba, wild buffalo,
sloth bear, jackal, mongoose, pangolins and crocodiles.
|
Day 11
|
Day 11 takes us out onto the coast road where we will
still be able to experience the damage caused by the
Tsunami. However, buildings are being repaired and
business and people living on the coast, are up and
running. Amongst the people who have rebounded
back from the Tsunami disaster are the fascinating stilt
fishermen of Unawatuna. Unawatuna Bay has
beautiful sun drenched beaches and is lined with
majestic coconut groves.
|
Day 12
|
The final day on the bikes sees us
follow the coast road back to Negombo. We will
visit the Kosgoda Turtle Research Centre which was
destroyed by the Tsunami. Thankfully, they were
soon up and running and are continuing there work
protecting five endangered turtle species including the
beautiful Leatherback turtle. One encouraging and
slightly surprising sign is that since the disaster the
number of turtles coming back to the beach has been more
than before the disaster and so the volunteers and staff
are optimistic that with help to rebuild they can
continue successfully in the future.
